Typeface Design
Salem is a sharp and scary uppercase font inspired by the horror genre, spiders and witchcraft. Salem combines pointed and curved stems to create a unique aesthetic. The balance of thin and thick strokes within the font creates an odd balance that can be interpreted as off-putting. The desired creepy effect is created by mixing sharp edges with curved legs and oddly shaped bowls and counters. Letters are exaggerated, thin and stretched more vertically which are common attributes of a fictional monster that would be seen in a horror movie. It is unique in the way that it combines its inspirations to create an expressive text.
